Rathmore 2-16, Laune Rangers 1-10
Laune Rangers made the trip to Rathbeg for Round 10 of Division 1 of the County Senior Football League, but came up short in a defeat that all but condemns them to demotion. Despite some well-worked scores and a first-half goal from Eoin Clifford, the visitors found themselves chasing the game after Rathmore struck for two quickfire goals before the break and maintained their lead in a controlled second-half showing.
The hosts made a lively start with early points from Brian Friel, Alan Dineen, and Mark Reen before Laune Rangers got off the mark through Gearóid Hassett and two frees from Darragh O’Grady. Rathmore quickly responded, however, with a goal and a point from Moynihans John and Daniel to push themselves ahead.
Eoin Clifford got Laune Rangers back in the game when he netted a well-taken goal in the 21st minute, and Gearóid Hassett added another score moments later to level matters. But Rathmore struck back immediately — John Moynihan raised a second green flag for the home side straight from a turnover at the kickout that followed a point by Moynihan that had regained his side’s lead.
Further scores from Ciarán Collins, Cian O’Connor, and Alan Dineen before the break gave Rathmore a commanding 2-10 to 1-6 lead at half-time.
Laune Rangers battled gamely in the second half, with John Tyther and Eoin Clifford among the scorers, though the latter’s two point effort from outside the scoring arc was only counted as a single. Rathmore, meanwhile, kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Mark Reen, Brian Friel & Darragh Rahilly.
A fifteen minute scoreless run didn’t aid Laune Rangers as they saw a number of one and two point efforts go wide before John Tyther slotted a free in injury time. Rathmore kicked the final score of the game though through Cian Dineen.
