Laune Rangers line up for National Anthem

Laune Rangers 3-11, St Brendans 3-14

Laune Rangers were defeated at home to St Brendans on Thursday evening in the County Minor Championship, although a fantastic comeback made for a highly exciting last quarter after a nightmare start for the Killorglin men.

Laune Rangers were first to score as Adam O’Neill raised an early orange flag with a two point free.  A fortuitous goal for St Brendans gave the visitors a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game, and they dominated for the next fifteen minutes to score two further goals and seven unanswered points to take a thirteen point lead with 20 minutes played.

The crossbar denied Adam O’Neill a first Laune Rangers goal, but it was the start of a swing in momentum.  A Colm Evans pointed free was cancelled out by a free at the other end.  An Adam O’Neill free was followed by Laune Rangers opening goal to give Laune Rangers some hope before the break – Aaron Doyle finishing a great run by smashing the ball to the net.

Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-4, St Brendans 3-7.

Like he had done in the first, Adam O’Neill opened the second half with a long range pointed free for two points, and followed it up with a single a minute later.  Aaron Doyle added a point to his earlier goal before Laune Rangers raised a green flag for the second time.  Jamie Flynn rounded the goalkeeper and a couple of defenders before shooting – the umpires confirming the ball crossed the line into the goal – to leave two points between the sides.

St Brendans pointed twice to double the lead before Adam O’Neill replied with a pointed free to leave Laune Rangers trailing by 3-9 to 2-9 with a quarter to play.

A timely two point free for St Brendans was met by an Adam O’Neill point for Rangers before O’Neill finished a swift team move by burying the ball to the net – just a point separating the sides now.

Two St Brendans points put them three ahead, although Maiao Harmon reduced the gap to two with a well taken point.  Laune Rangers pressed forward looking for a levelling two pointer or a goal to snatch the win, but St Brendans managed out the game well – even after a late black card – and the visitors pointed with the last kick of the game to secure victory.
