Laune Rangers – 1897

 

J.P. O Sullivan (Firies) was elected President (Chairman) of the Kerry Co. Board at its Annual Convention but withdrew at the next meeting, although he continued to attend every subsequent meeting of the Co. Board. The outgoing President, Thomas Slattery, had declined to continue in his position, even though he, too, continued to attend each subsequent Co. Board meeting, and the Vice-President, James Moynihan, was forced to act as President.

 

Such was the amount of objections and lack of cooperation from the clubs that the championship was not completed until the following year.

 

Kerry affiliated with Central Council but did not partake in the inter-county competition.

Co. Senior Football Championship

Fifteen teams played in the Co. Senior Football Championship, Cordal, Cahersiveen, Castleisland, Killarney, Listowel, Ballymac 1^st, Ballymac 2^nd, Camp, Currans, Tralee, Irremore, Firies, Portmagee and Valentia and Lispole. Once again Laune Rangers did not partake.

 

Tralee Mitchels, captained by James O Connell, received a walk-over from Irremore in the final, which was not scheduled until 4^th June 1998.

 

Administration/Miscellany

 

Frank B. Dineen, Luimneach, was Uachtarán CLG.

The 11^th Annual Congress was held in Thurles on 4^th July. J.P. O Sullivan was Kerry’s representative.  Kerry, at the Co. Board meeting on Sat. 10^th April, had decided to affiliate to Central Council, even though they did not take part in the inter-county competitions.

 

The Annual Convention of the Kerry Co. Board was held in Tralee on Wed. 17^th March. Tom Slattery, Chairman, presided. He hoped that the inactivity of the second half of the previous year would not be repeated. Due to the fact that the Convention clashed with the big fair in Castleisland and that some clubs had not affiliated, it was decided to postpone the election of officers until a later date.

The Convention reconvened on Sat. 27^th March and the following officers were elected: President – J.P. O Sullivan (Firies), as Tom Slattery did not seek re-election and resisted the many efforts to get him to reconsider, Vice-President – James Moynihan, Secretary – Denis Bunyan, Treasurer – Michael Hanlon, Committee – Tim Herlihy (Castleisland), M. Dean (Camp), Tom Slattery (Tralee), Dr. Horan (Firies), Robert Casey (Lispole), E. Shanahan (O Dorney), P. Sheehy (Tralee), Pat McGillycuddy (Cahersiveen), John Brosnan (Irremore) and William O Connell (Kilmoyley). J.P. O Sullivan and Denis Bunyan were appointed as delegates to the Thurles Convention. J.P. O Sullivan was appointed the official handicapper for the association in the county. Laune Rangers were not represented at the Convention or at any Co. Board meetings during the year.

At the Co. Board meeting on Sat. 10^th April, J.P. O Sullivan resigned as President of the Co. Board, saying that he had found it impossible to attend to the duties of the office. James Moynihan acted as President, although J.P. continued to attend the Co. Board meetings.

 

Co. Senior Football Championship on Sun. 27^th June at Tralee: Castleisland 0-2; Killarney 0-0.

Co. Senior Football Championship on Sun. 25^th July at Cahersiveen: Portmagee 1-4; Firies 0-4.

J.P. O Sullivan was the captain of the Firies team.

 

The quarter-final of the Co. Championship, Killarney v Cahersiveen, was scheduled on two occasions for Killorglin, with Pat Teahan as referee but the games did not take place. Eventually, the conclusion of the championship was deferred until the following year.

 

J.P. O Sullivan was handicapper, starter and manager of the following sports meetings during the year:

Sat. 9^th Jan. – Cordal Athletic Sports.

Mon. 7^th June – Ardfert Sports.

Sun. 15^th Aug. – Milltown Sports.

Mon. 20^th Sept. – Kenmare Gaelic Sports.

Sun. 3^rd Oct. – South-Kerry Cycling and Athletic Sports in Waterville.
