The Treasurers’ Report was delivered by Eamonn Crowley. He reported an excess of income of £1,514 over expenditure, due totally, as he said, to the dancing. The club had 49 dances during the year. Pat O Shea congratulated the Joint-Treasurers on their efficient management of the financial affairs of the club during the year, culminating in a very well presented Balance Sheet. Joe Crowley proposed its adoption and Billy Dodd seconded.

The Annual Bord na nOg Report was given by Pat O Shea. The club had made a clean sweep of Mid-Kerry competitions in 1977, winning the U-12, U-14 and U-16 Championships. The club had been beaten in the Co. U-12 final, the Co. U-14 Semi-final and the Co. U-16 Final. Liam Shannon proposed the adoption of the report and Michael Foley seconded.

The election of officers then took place.

President – Paddy Foley.                                                                                             Chairman – nominated were James Coffey and Pat O Shea. The latter withdrew and James Coffey declared himself elected for another year. In his address to the convention, he allowed that there had been plenty of activity on the field of play and in the J.P. O Sullivan Park. He congratulated the minor team on winning the Co. Minor Championship for the first time. He said that the real goal was the Co. Senior Championship within a few years. He thanked the teachers of both the Vocational and Intermediate Schools for their promotion of the game in their schools. He alleged that the club had been ill-treated by the Mid-Kerry Board, particularly by the referees. He said that, if the players wished to remain in Mid-Kerry competitions, he was agreeable. He, also, raised the possibility of bringing in outside referees to officiate at Mid-Kerry games. Finally, he thanked all the officers for their help during the year and the leaders of the sub-committees. He paid special tribute to the Secretary, Jerome Conway, whose job was becoming more and more difficult each year. ‘A club is as good and as strong as its Secretary and we are very lucky in Jerome Conway,’ he said.

Vice-Chairman – nominated were Sean O Reilly, Pat Lynch, Bart Moriarty and Jim Galvin. The latter three withdrew their names and Sean O Reilly was declared re-elected.

Secretary – there was only one nomination and, accordingly, Jerome Conway was re-elected for another year.

Treasurers – Eamonn Crowley and John Foley were the only nominations and were declared re-elected.

Registrar – nominated were Joe Crowley, Pat Lynch and Bart Moriarty. The latter two withdrew their names and Joe Crowley was declared elected.

Delegate to Co. Board – nominated were Maurice Harmon and Joe Crowley. The latter withdrew his name and Maurice Harmon was declared re-elected.

Delegates to Mid-Kerry Convention – nominated were Maurice Harmon, Eamonn Crowley, Bart Moriarty, Pat O Shea and Denis O Neill. The latter three withdrew their names and Maurice Harmon and Eamonn Crowley were declared elected.

Delegates to Co. Convention – proposed were Maurice Harmon, Bart Moriarty, Joe Crowley and Jerome Conway. The latter withdrew his name the other three were elected.

Senior Trainer – nominated were Barry Harmon and Jerome Conway.

There were two motions on the ‘clár’ regarding the Senior Trainer

  1. ‘That the functions of trainer and coach be the responsibility of one man, not two.’ Proposed by Declan Falvey, seconded by Dan Carey. That was passed.
  2. ‘That the trainer of the senior team be selected by the officers of the club and the senior selection committee at the first meeting of the club.’ Proposed by Pat O Shea and seconded by Joe Crowley. That was adopted. At the club meeting on 30th Jan. Pat O Shea proposed Jerome Conway as senior trainer and Jim Casey seconded. As there was no other proposition, he was appointed.

Senior Selection Committee – nominated were Bart Moriarty, Maurice Harmon, Batty Foley, Pat O Shea, Barry Harmon, Noel O Mahony, Billy Dodd, Ted Houlihan, James Coffey, Liam Shannon and Jerome Conway.

There were two motions regarding the senior selection committee.

  1. ‘That all players have a vote in the election of the senior selection committee.’ (Billy Dodd). The Chairman ruled that motion out of order, as it was contrary to the Official Guide.
  2. ‘That any playing member of the senior panel can be considered as a candidate for the senior selection committee.’ (Declan Falvey). That was seconded by Barry Harmon. The proposer argued that the presence of one or more players on the senior selection committee would enhance good relations between players and selectors. The motion was defeated by 15 votes to 7.

The election of the senior selection committee proceeded. The first three nominated withdrew their names. In the ensuing vote, the following were declared elected: Pat O Shea, Noel O Mahony, Billy Dodd and Jerome Conway. There was a tie between Liam Shannon and James Coffey. The latter withdrew and that completed the committee.

Novice Selection Committee – Billy Dodd, James O Riordan, Eamonn Crowley, Bart Moriarty, Pat O Shea, Liam Shannon, James Coffey, Maurice Harmon, John A. O Brien (all of whom withdrew their names), Jim Casey, Pat Lynch, Michael Foley and Dan Carey (all of whom were declared elected).

Minor Selection Committee: Noel O Mahony (trainer), Pat O Shea, Jerome Conway and Liam Shannon.

The following motions were, also, discussed:

  1. ‘That players, who are selected and tog-out for any teams, excluding underage teams, on three or more occasions, become automatic full members.’ (Billy Dodd). The Chairman ruled the motion out of order as it was contrary to the Official Guide.
  2. ‘That membership of players be compulsory, the fee to be collected by the registrar before any player in question sets foot on a football field. If the fee has not been collected before a player begins the playing year, it is to be assumed that he is granted free membership of the club, is provided with a membership card and is entitled to vote at convention.’ (Declan Falvey). That motion was discussed at length. Finally it was rephrased as follows and accepted: ‘That the membership of players, over 16 years of age, be compulsory, the fee to be collected by the registrar before the 1st June. Thereafter, for the remainder of the year, if a player has not paid the membership fee, he may not play for the club or in the Parish League.’
  3. ‘That the captain of the senior team be elected at convention, rather than selected by the senior selection committee.’ (Declan Falvey). Withdrawn.
  4. ‘That the senior captain be elected by the senior players.’ (Billy Dodd, seconded by Declan Falvey). The motion was defeated.
  5. ‘That the club consider entering two teams in the Co. League.’ (Pat O Shea, seconded by Dan Carey). It was unanimously agreed to enter a team in Divisions 1 and 4 of the Co. League.
  6. ‘That the club consider entering two teams in the Co. Minor League – team ‘A’ in the urban league and team ‘B’ in the rural league.’ (Pat O Shea, seconded by Maurice Harmon). Adopted.
  7. ‘That the 11-a-side Parish League be revived.’ (Maurice Harmon). A decision was deferred to the club committee meeting.
  8. ‘That no senior Parish League be played in the period from 1st Nov. to 28th Feb.’ (Billy Dodd). After much debate, that was withdrawn in favour of using both the summer and winter for Parish Leagues.
  9. ‘That more prompt and swift action be taken in the dismissal and replacement of a senior selector, who fails to show for three consecutive games.’ (Declan Falvey). Adopted.
  10. ‘That all selectors, present at a game, be on the sideline, not amongst the spectators.’ (Declan Falvey). Adopted.
  11. ‘That the Co. Board Delegate gives a report to the club meeting after each Co. Board meeting.’ (Declan Falvey). Adopted.
  12. ‘That the Annual Convention be scheduled for July or an appropriate time during the football season.’ (Barry Harmon, seconded by Ted Houlihan). Withdrawn.
  13. ‘That efforts be made to avoid a clash, as happened on St. Stephen’s Day, with the Basketball Club.’ (Barry Harmon). Adopted.
  14. ‘That players, who train, be selected on the team before those, who do not train.’ (Barry Harmon). It was left to the discretion of the various selection committees.
  15. ‘That the proceeds of one dance per year be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.’ (Billy Dodd, seconded by Declan Falvey). It was agreed to give a donation each year to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
  16. ‘That more be done to encourage lady members.’ (Declan Falvey). Adopted.
  17. ‘That the minutes of Co. Board meetings be distributed to all clubs, with the agenda for the next meeting.’ (Joe Crowley). Adopted and forwarded to Co. Convention.

The Convention then set about discussing and adopting a new constitution and set of rules for the club. That proved slower than anticipated and, due to the shortage of time, the Convention was adjourned to the next available date (6th March).

At the resumption of the AGM on 6th March, the following Central Executive Committee (in accordance with the Club Constitution) was elected: Chairman (James Coffey), Vice-Chairman (Sean O Reilly), Secretary (Jerome Conway), Joint-Treasurers (Eamonn Crowley and John Foley), Registrar (Pat Lynch), Jim Casey, Dan Carey, Michael Foley, Liam Shannon and Declan Crowley (U-21 member). At the club meeting on 24th April, Pat O Shea was co-opted onto the C.E.C.

Co. Senior Football Championship

Fifteen teams played in the Co. Senior Football Championship, Spa, John Mitchels (with Ballymac and Churchill), Castleisland, Kenmare, Killarney, Eoghan Ruadh, Kerins O Rahilly’s, Na Fianna (Firies, Kilcummin, Listry and Fossa), Mid-Kerry, Laune Rangers, Feale Rangers, Shannon Rangers, South-Kerry, Austin Stack’s, West-Kerry.

Laune Rangers’ Selection Committee – Pat O Shea, Noel O Mahony, Billy Dodd, Liam Shannon and Jerome Conway (trainer).

Rd. 1 on Sun. 25th June at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 0-5; Mid-Kerry 0-13.

Midfield dominance was the vital factor in that game, with Mid-Kerry, as expected, coming out on top. Played before a fair-sized crowd, the game never rose to any great heights, mainly due to the hard, close tackling by both sides.

However, a few players managed to stand out, notably Mid-Kerry’s Paudie Lynch, who had one of his finest hours at midfield. His four second-half points from play killed any hopes Rangers had of making a recovery. That was Lynch at his best, making the ball do the work, while his partner, Neilie O Sullivan, who also had the game of his life, did all the running to create openings, which kept the Rangers’ defence pinned well back.

Laune Rangers, except for a brief spell, were just not in it at midfield. Several switches were made but, instead of improving matters, they only made them worse. Another big difference between the sides was in height and strength and Laune Rangers did not have enough players to fit those requirements. Senior championship football is no place for weak players. The Rangers’ youngsters in attack saw plenty of the ball, especially in the first half, but they were too easily pushed around to be of any danger to a strong Mid-Kerry defence.

The first half opened with Rangers attacking to force a thirteen-metres’ free but James Sheehan sent wide. The Killorglin side kept up the pressure and after seven minutes Michael Francis O Shea pointed a forty five. It was all Rangers at that stage but the scores were not coming. The next flag was not raised until the 13th minute, when Teddy Clifford slipped over Rangers’ second point. The Mid-Kerry forwards had seen little of the ball up to that but, once they were brought into the game, they soon equalised through points by Derry O Sullivan and Brendan Lynch. John Horgan put Rangers back in front after 22 minutes but Brendan Lynch kicked two points to give Mid-Kerry the lead for the first time. Teddy Clifford had the sides level again with a point in the 29th minute but Mid-Kerry hit back with a point by Derry O Sullivan, followed by another from a free by Brendan Lynch in the 33rd minute to leave them ahead by 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

Mid-Kerry, with wind advantage, took control on the restart and Paudie Lynch kicked two fine points from far outfield. Rangers fought back and played well for a ten minutes’ spell but their only score was a point from a James Sheehan free. Rangers introduced Johnny Byrnes to the attack but it was too late, as Mid-Kerry had got back into their stride and, when Paudie Lynch added another fine point eleven minutes from the end, it was obvious that there could be only one result.

Laune Rangers had a fine defence, which gave little away despite almost continuous pressure in the second half. The hero was Eamonn Crowley, who, at fullback and centre halfback, played really great football. What a pity for Rangers that there were not a few Crowleys further up the field! He got tremendous support from James O Shea, Michael Francis O Shea and Liam Woods, who, at right halfback, won the hearts of friend and foe alike. Peter Lyons kept a very safe goal. In attack, Teddy Clifford had a very good first half, while Frank Russell won repeated applause for his fine fielding. Unfortunately, apart from John Horgan and John O Neill in patches, there was little else to note about the attack until Johnny Brynes appeared on the scene. By then, as stated, the game had gone from Rangers, who had started with eight minor players on the side.

Laune Rangers: Peter Lyons, James O Shea, Eamonn Crowley, Anthony Shannon, Liam Woods, Michael F. O Shea (0-1), John Clifford, Tom Johnston, Patsy Joy, Gerard O Shea, Teddy Clifford (capt.) 0-2, John Horgan (0-1), John O Neill, Frank Russell, James Sheehan (0-1). Subs: Declan Falvey for P. Joy, Johnny Byrnes for G. O Shea, Barry Harmon for J. Sheehan.

Mid-Kerry: Donie Hartnett (Beaufort), Frank Coffey (do.), Mike Breen (Glenbeigh), Jim Foley (Keel), Donal Courtney (Beaufort), John Griffin (Glenbeigh), Pat O Riordan (do.), Paudie Lynch (Beaufort) 0-4, Neilie O Sullivan (Glenbeigh), Brendan Lynch (Beaufort) 0-6, Mike O Shea (Keel), Dan Coffey (Beaufort), Bernie Coffey (do.), Derry O Sullivan (Glenbeigh) 0-3, Michael O Grady (do.). Subs: Mike Moriarty (Glenbeigh)) for M. O Shea, Jim Daly (Milltown/Castlemaine) for B. Coffey.

Feale Rangers, captained by Johnny Wrenn, defeated Mid-Kerry in the Co. Final by 0-8 to 0-3.

Rd. 1 on Sun. 5th March at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 2-3; Ballylongford 0-8.

Nine minors commenced the game for Laune Rangers and their fitness and spirit made up for their lack of experience. However, poor finishing nearly cost them the points.

O Shea, John Clifford, Patsy Joy, John O Neill, Gerard O Shea, Teddy Clifford, John Horgan, Anthony Corkery (1-0), Declan Falvey (0-1), James Sheehan (1-1). Subs: Tom O Connor for E. Rd. 4 on Sat. 27th May at Glenflesk: Rathmore 3-4; Laune Rangers 1-10.    After being on top for most of the game, Rangers were lucky in the end to share the points. They failed to score from a penalty midway through the second half, at which time they were leading by three points. Nevertheless, the point left the team clear at the top of Division 1, with a game in hand.

Rd. 6 on Sat. 3rd June at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 0-7, Legion 1-7.

Rd. 7 on Tues. 27th June at Waterville: Waterville 1-7; Laune Rangers 1-11.

Rd. 10 on Sun. 20th Aug. at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 1-4; Glenbeigh 3-9.

Glenbeigh were much too strong for Laune Rangers in that game. The first half was very one-sided with Glenbeigh, despite facing a slight breeze, dominating in all sectors and they led comfortably at halftime by 2-5 to 0-1. Rangers made some positional switches for the second half and that brought some improvement but a strong Glenbeigh defence held firm. Best for the winners were Owen O Riordan (goals), Pat O Riordan, Mike Breen, Father Anthony O Sullivan and Mike Horan in defence, Neilie O Sullivan and Donie O Sullivan at midfield, and Jimmy Healy, Mike O Grady and Denis Griffin in attack. For the Rangers, Michael F. O Shea, James O Shea and Anthony Shannon played well in defence, Patsy Joy improved matters at midfield in the second half, but only Johnny Byrnes and Joe Crowley stood out in attack.

Rd. 11 on Sat. 2nd Sept. at Killorglin: Laune Rangers lost to Austin Stacks.

Rd. 9 on Sun. 3rd Sept. at Spa: Spa beat Laune Rangers.

Mid-Kerry Senior Championship

Losers’ Round on Sun. 27th Aug. at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 0-5; Milltown/Castlemaine 0-8.

It had been twenty years almost to the day since Laune Rangers had won their first Mid-Kerry Senior Championship and judging from the performance it looked very like it would take twenty years more before they would win it again. Certainly that performance was easily the Rangers’ poorest ever in the senior championship. Milltown/Castlemaine just were not given a chance following earlier defeats at the hands of Rangers’ second string.

The game only attracted a handful of spectators but they got little to cheer about as the Milltown veterans Billy Kerins and James Mangan played ducks and drakes with the local defence, scoring seven of their sides total between them. They got good assistance from Ted Kennedy and Jim Daly, while John Murrihy lorded matters at midfield. In an uncompromising defence Mike Colgan, William Mangan, Murphy, and Connie Hayes were on top, while Willie Maher was another to play well.

Laune Rangers played as if there was nothing at stake. They showed a complete lack of spirit and they just did not seem fit for championship football. Jack Reen, Liam Woods and Michael F. O Shea played their hearts out in defence. Tom Johnston had his moments at midfield but only Patsy Joy, while at full-forward, John O Neill in the second half and Johnny Byrnes, when at wing forward, looked like making a game of it. John Horgan had a good game in several positions but his kicking was poor, while Mícheál Johnston missed two glorious chances of goals as well as being off target with his place kicking. It was possibly lucky that Rangers lost that game as they would probably have been annihilated by Beaufort in the semi-final. It was a pity that some players did not think it worth their while to turn out for Laune Rangers anymore, especially the younger players who owed so much to men like Pat O Shea, Jerome Conway and Noel O Mahony.

O Shea, Anthony Shannon, Liam Woods, James O Shea (0-1, free), John Clifford, Patsy Joy, John O Neill (0-1), Gerard O Shea (0-1), Teddy Clifford, John Horgan, Jimmy O Shea (0-1), Frank Russell (1-0), James Sheehan (0-3, 2 frees). Subs: Declan Falvey (late arrival) (0-1) for T. O Connor, Peter Lyons, (disciplined), Mícheál O Callaghan.

Ref: Michael O Sullivan (Glenbeigh).

Rd. 2 on Sun. 9th April at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 0-11; Beaufort 2-6.

The fine attendance witnessed what must have been the finest exhibition of place-kicking ever seen at the J.P. O Sullivan Park from Beaufort’s John Coffey. He scored 1-6 of his side’s total and four of his points came from sideline kicks, two of which would long be remembered. His second last effort was from an almost impossible angle to put his side ahead.

That game was a thrilling affair. The huge crowd in the seated stand gave it a Croke Park-style atmosphere and how the players enjoyed it! They responded with the type of football Mid-Kerry fans used to like so well, but seemed lost until that day. The first half was played at an exceptionally fast pace, with Laune Rangers moving well to take a two points’ lead only to be rocked back on their heels by a Bernie Coffey goal. The locals fought back and, with the forwards combining well, James Sheehan and Gerard O Shea had them ahead again and it looked as if they would have a substantial lead built up by the interval. However, Beaufort broke away for a point and then a goal by John Coffey and Rangers had to settle for a halftime lead of 0-8 to 2-1.

Shortly after the interval, with Beaufort enjoying wind advantage, Coffey put the sides level with a fine point. A minute later, the same player put his side ahead with the first of his side-line kicks. Laune Rangers, with the edge at midfield, were playing well but the scores were not coming. In the 37th minute, they were awarded a penalty but, to the dismay of players and supporters alike, James O Shea blasted well wide. When Coffey again scored from the sideline, it looked all over, but back came Rangers again. The Beaufort defenders were forced to foul and James Sheehan punished them with two well-taken points from frees and the sides were level once more with eleven minutes remaining.

It was at that stage that Rangers probably lost the game. They had glorious chances of points but insisted on going for goals. Coffey put Beaufort ahead but James Sheehan levelled with two minutes remaining. At that stage, a draw seemed likely, but Coffey had other ideas, when walking up to the final sideline kick.

Outstanding for Beaufort were Kieran Breen, Frank Coffey and Aidan Kelly in defence, John and Bernie Coffey in attack, while Paudie Lynch and Dan Coffey had their moments at midfield. The former seemed hampered by a leg injury. For Rangers, John O Neill and the veteran Patsy Joy had the edge at midfield but the defence was very shaky in the first half and should never have conceded two goals. The defence was in command in the second half with Michael F. O Shea, Jimmy O Shea and James O Shea outstanding. In attack, James Sheehan and Gerard O Shea were in great form and they got good support from Teddy Clifford and John Horgan.

Laune Rangers: Mike O Shea, Liam Woods, Michael F. O Shea, Anthony Shannon, Jimmy O Shea, James O Shea (0-1, free), John Clifford, Patsy Joy, John O Neill (0-1), Gerard O Shea (0-1), Teddy Clifford (0-2), John Horgan, Frank Russell, Declan Falvey, James Sheehan (0-6, 4 frees). Subs: Anthony Corkery for D. Falvey, Peter Lyons, Joe Crowley.

Rd. 3 on Sun. 16th April at Rossbeigh: Glenbeigh 1-7; Laune Rangers 0-7.

Glenbeigh pipped the Rangers with a goal in injury time. Gerard O Shea, Laune Rangers, and Pat O Riordan, Glenbeigh, were sent off for fighting. At the subsequent Mid-Kerry Board meeting, they were suspended for two weeks. Laune Rangers had played a Co. League game against Moyvane on the previous day. As a result of that game, Rangers had to beat Milltown/Castlemaine in order to qualify for a play-off.

Laune Rangers: Peter Lyons, Liam Woods, James O Shea, Anthony Shannon, Jimmy O Shea, Michael F. O Shea, John Clifford, Patsy Joy (0-1), Teddy Clifford (0-3, 2 frees), Gerard O Shea, Declan Falvey (0-1), John Horgan (0-1), Frank Russell (0-1), Joe Crowley, Barry Harmon. Subs: Mike O Shea for J. Crowley, Mícheál O Callaghan, Tom O Connor.

Glenbeigh: Owen O Riordan, Father Anthony O Sullivan, Mike Breen, Sean Griffin, Kevin Griffin, John Griffin, Pat O Riordan, Peadar O Sullivan, Mike O Grady, Mike Moriarty, Derry O Sullivan, Michael Horan, Denis Griffin, Mike O Riordan, Donie O Sullivan. Sub: Padraig O Shea for P. O Sullivan.

Rd. 4 on Sun. 14th May at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 3-7; Milltown/Castlemaine 2-5.

Rangers had to win that game to remain in the competition. They led by ten points at the interval but Milltown/Castlemaine fought back spiritedly in the second half to eventually lose by five points.

Laune Rangers: Peter Lyons, Liam Woods, James O Shea, Anthony Shannon, Jimmy O Shea, Michael F. O Shea, John Clifford, Patsy Joy, Teddy Clifford (0-1), Gerard O Shea, Frank Russell (1-0), John Horgan (0-1), Joe Crowley (1-1), Barry Harmon, James Sheehan (1-4). Subs: Mícheál O Callaghan for L. Woods.

After the preliminary rounds, Beaufort had qualified for the final and three teams, Keel, Glenbeigh and Laune Rangers were on level points in second place. It was decided to draw one from the hat and play a game between the other two. Laune Rangers were drawn into the semi-final.

Semi-final on Sun. 11th June at Milltown: Glenbeigh 2-4; Laune Rangers 0-8.

The game, played in glorious weather conditions, never rose to the expected heights and, in fact, the closeness of the scores kept the interest of the spectators alive. It was easily the poorest exhibition between the two sides for many a day. Rangers were without the Johnstons, Tom and Mícheál, Teddy Clifford, Michael Francis O Shea and Gerard O Shea. Glenbeigh were without Pat Sheahan.

The main difference between the sides lay in the respective attacks. Glenbeigh, from the few opportunities presented, scored vital goals in the 7th and 22nd minutes of the first half. On both occasions they were behind at the time. The woodwork robbed Laune Rangers of two seemingly certain goals in each half, but, with better judgement, these efforts should have been scored.

Twelve minutes elapsed before a flag was raised. That was a point by James Sheahan from a free. At the interval, Glenbeigh led by 2-2 to 0-6. Rangers’ forwards were guilty of faulty shooting as they enjoyed the greater share of the midfield play, with Liam Woods in particularly good form. However, between over-playing the ball, selfishness and stupid fouling, the efforts of the outfield players went to naught. The Rangers defence was very solid, giving little away, apart from two blunders that were punished.

Peter Lyons had a few good saves to his credit but he made a few mistakes, which could have been more costly against a more alert attack. Eamonn Crowley, at fullback and at centre halfback, and James O Shea, who exchanged positions, were pillars of strength in defence. They got great support from Jimmy O Shea and John Clifford. As already stated, Liam Woods had a splendid game at midfield, where he got good support from Patsy Joy. In attack, Anthony Corkery spoiled some great work by over-playing the ball. Frank Russell had a great first half, but he was starved of the ball in the second half. James Sheehan had a disappointing game. Scorers for Laune Rangers were James Sheehan (0-3), Frank Russell (0-2), Anthony Corkery (0-2), Declan Falvey (0-1).

Laune Rangers’ Selection Committee – Noel O Mahony, Pat O Shea, Jerome Conway and Liam Shannon.

Rd. 1 on Tues. 18th July at Austin Stack Park: John Mitchels 1-6; Laune Rangers 0-9.

John Mitchels had come very close to pulling off a shock result. Rangers had twelve of the previous year’s winning team on duty and could very well have been pipped in the closing stages after Mitchels had levelled with a goal by Tommy Kelliher. Mitchels, who had amalgamated with Ballymacelligott for the championship, were without Kerry minor P.J. Kerins in the first half but he made a big difference when he came on at halftime.

Replay on Sun. 30th July at Killorglin: Laune Rangers 1-6; John Mitchel’s 3-8.

Rangers elected to play with the aid of the wind and opened the scoring with a great point. Mitchels levelled shortly afterwards but Rangers got going in earnest and notched up a goal and two points without reply. At halftime, the home side led by 1-5 to 0-2. Mitchels made some positional switches at the restart, including bringing P.J. Kerins to midfield, where he excelled. Rangers could only manage one point in the second half, while Mitchels whittled away at their lead and eventually won well. Midway through the second half, the team allowed itself to be drawn into a squabble with the opposition, which was a fatal move against Mitchels. A combination of over-confidence and a surfeit of football by some players, who were playing senior, U-21 and minor for the club, contributed to the loss.

Final on Sat. 13th May at Killarney: Laune Rangers 2-15; Austin Stacks 0-5.

Laune Rangers displayed all their great football skills in that game to add the Co. League to their long list of successes. The game was virtually over at the interval, when the Rangers turned over with a lead of 0-7 to 0-2, having played against a strong wind, and the second half was only a formality.

However, in the opening eight minutes, the Stacks full-forward line was guilty of very faulty finishing, which could have given them a two goals’ lead but, once the Rangers settled down, there was only one team in it. The outstanding player on view was young Anthony Shannon, who, despite playing in the unusual position of centre halfback, gave one of the finest displays seen at that venue for many a day and that on no less a player than Billy Carroll. With the latter out of the game, the losers were unable to set up any worthwhile attacking movement, except for substitute Liam Kerins, who impressed with one great run that seemed to upset the Rangers defence but, alas, the goal they so badly needed never came. James Sheehan, for the winners, was another to leave his mark on the game and his scores from play as well as from placed balls bore the stamp of class.

In a team that had few weaknesses, Laune Rangers had other outstanding players in the O Sheas, Mike Frank, Gerard and Seamus, Liam Woods, Anthony Corkery, John Costello, John O Neill, Mícheál Johnston and John O Dwyer. Michael O Connor, Kerry’s Delegate to Munster Council, presented the cup to the winners’ captain, Mícheál O Callaghan.

A huge cavalcade of cars led the team through the streets of Killorglin and, once again the players received a rousing welcome as they were presented to the crowd by Jerome Conway.

Semi-final on Fri. 8th Sept: Laune Rangers ‘B’ beat Glenbeigh

Final on Sun. 10th Sept. at Killorglin: Laune Rangers ‘B’ 1-9; Laune Rangers ‘A’ 2-2.

When the ‘B’ team could only lead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the interval having played with the aid of a strong wind, it looked odds on a victory for the holders. However, in a fast-moving second half, the great fighting spirit of the new champions was again in evidence and, after conceding an early goal and having a penalty kick brilliantly saved by Peter Lyons, they held on in a hectic finish to bring off the shock of the year. In a team full of talent, Stephen Russell, Donal Mangan, Joe Shannon, Paudie Sheahan, John Griffin, John and Ger Hurley, Sean O Sullivan, Seamus O Shea, Raymond Murphy, Podge Freeman and Pierce Prendiville looked great. For the losers, only Michael F. O Shea, John Horgan, John O Neill, Anthony Shannon and John Costello looked capable of saving the day. It was a hard and ill-tempered affair, culminating in a shock result. Gerard O Shea threw his jersey on the field and stormed off, in a fit of temper, at the end of the game. After the game, James Coffey presented the trophy to the winning captain, Raymond Murphy.

Laune Rangers ‘B’: Ger Hurley, Pat Pigott, Brian O Shea, John Hurley, Jim Johnston, Stephen Russell, Donal Mangan, Paudie Sheahan, Joe Shannon, John Griffin, Raymond Murphy, Sean O Sullivan (Lonart), Pierce Prendiville, Seamus O Shea, Podge Freeman. All-Ireland Minor Seven-a-side

The club was invited to compete in the All-Ireland Minor seven-a-side blitz, which was organised by Athlone Minor Football Club, on Sat. 1st April. The entry fee was £10.

1st Game – Laune Rangers 1-6; Elphin (Roscommon) 1-1

2nd Game – Laune Rangers 5-8; Ballymahon (Longford) 0-3

3rd Game – Laune Rangers 0-9; Castlerea (Roscommon) 2-1

Semi-final – Laune Rangers 6-5; Donaghmore (Meath) 1-4.

Final – Laune Rangers 6-8; Salthill (Galway) 7-2.

Laune Rangers took an early lead in the final and they seemed assured of victory. However, Salthill, experts at the seven-a-side game, had other ideas and, with their goalkeeper continually acting as an extra man, they rattled in three goals and looked like getting more. Nevertheless, Laune Rangers, playing seven-a-side for the first time, never panicked and, in a great second half, they picked off the vital scores in typical Kerry fashion. The Laune Rangers’ players and officials were loud in their praise of the promoting club, Athlone, and, in particular, secretary, Vincent Conaire, who looked after all the arrangements. The competition was run off in a most efficient manner and the standard of refereeing was very high.

Laune Rangers: Michael F. O Shea (capt.), John O Neill, Anthony Shannon, John Horgan, Gerard O Shea, James Sheehan, Anthony Corkery, Mícheál Johnston, Liam Woods, Mícheál O Callaghan. Peter Lyons was also taken to Athlone but he was not on the official panel of ten. Mentors, who travelled were Noel O Mahony, Pat O Shea, Liam Shannon, Jerome Conway, Billy Dodd. Joe Crowley gave £50 sponsorship towards the event.

All-Ireland Semi-final on Sat. 8th April at Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary: Kerry 2-8; Meath 1-7.

James Sheehan was in scintillating form at full-forward, scoring 2-2 and having a big hand in the overall scheme of things. He scored a great goal in the twenty-fourth minute, which helped his side to be on level terms at halftime (1-4 each). The decisive score of the game came ten minutes from the end. Michael Keane fielded the ball around the seventy yards’ line and sent a quick pass the Jerry Kelliher. The Listowel boy went about twenty yards on a solo-run before parting to James Sheehan and the Laune Rangers star completely caught out the Meath defence with a classical shot to the net. John O Neill worked very hard at his game throughout at midfield, scoring 0-2 in the process. Anthony Corkery played at left halfback and Peter Lyons was substitute goalkeeper.

Field (Jim Casey) –

  1. At the meeting on 30th Jan. it was reported that, a) The stand had been stepped. b) The juvenile dressing rooms had been completed. c) The ladies’/gents’ toilets had been completed. d) The dugouts had been completed. e) The store cum shop had been almost completed. f) The alterations to the dressing-rooms had been almost completed.
  2. At the meeting on 20th Feb, it was decided to put wooden seating in the stand.
  3. Material, which was used for the embankment in the field, became available.
  4. In April, Con Counihan had almost completed the levelling of the juvenile pitch at the Northern end of the field. The matter of the unused pump that jutted out onto the property was then an issue. Pat O Shea and Jerome Conway, who had been in negotiations, for its purchase, with the owner, Danny Kissane, gave the go-ahead to Con Counihan to level it. At the club meeting on 24th April, a telegram was received from the owner advising the club to desist (At that stage the pump had been levelled). Thus commenced a legal wrangle that lasted for many years. A letter from Michael C. Ahern, solicitor for Danny Kissane, dated 22nd May 1978, was received. The complaints were that the GAA Club had entered his property without any authority and had demolished the water pump which had been standing therein and had demolished the boundary fence between the two properties. It was further complained that the club had excavated his land to a depth of four or five feet. Paddy O Shea, who had been grazing Danny Kissane’s property, had informed the solicitor that by demolishing the boundary fence, the club had left the property completely open. The letter concluded that unless the GAA Club agreed to remedy those wrongs, proceedings would be issued against it.
  5. The approach area from the gate to the stand was gravelled in May.
  6. Pat O Shea reported to the club meeting on 1st May that the J.P. O Sullivan Park had been recognised as a county ground, together with the Austin Stack Park and Fitzgerald Stadium. As a result of that recognition, the field qualified for special grants.
  7. The most recent renovations to the field incurred the following expenditure, Con Counihan £2,936, John McGillycuddy £432, Mikey Brosnan £1,700, Chubs £34, Wiring £80, M.F. Quirke £255, Jerry Griffin £7,500. Total – £12,937.
  8. A new set of goal-posts were purchased from Tom Prendergast (forestry). On Wed. 22nd Nov. Sean O Sullivan (haulage contractor) was employed to transport them from Killarney (£12). Also on hand on behalf of the club were Dan Carey, Jim Casey, Michael Foley and Jerome Conway. Jim Galvin re-sodded the goalmouths in Nov.

The following matters were, also, discussed at the club meetings:

  1. 23rd Jan – Eamonn Crowley proposed James Coffey as Chairman of the Mid-Kerry Board and Joe Crowley seconded. The outgoing Chairman, Kevin Griffin, Glenbeigh, was not seeking re-election.
  2. 27th Feb. – Affiliation to Kerry Co. Board cost £40.63
  3. 13th March – a donation of £50 was given to the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann to help it to organise the South-Kerry Fleadh Cheoil. It was also decided to write to both the Vice-Chairman (Sean O Reilly) and Delegate to the Co. Board (Maurice Harmon) advising them to attend club meetings or, if they did not, they would forfeit their posts.
  4. 4th Sept. – The fire insurance on the dressing-rooms was increased to £10,000 and the contents to £1,000. A donation of £100 was made to the Gary Scollard Benefit Fund. The club decided to invest £150 in the Co. Board’s Interest-Free Loan Scheme, which entitled the club to buy five All-Ireland Football Final tickets, when Kerry was in the final.

On Sat. 22nd April, the death occurred suddenly of John Foley, Anglont, former Chairman of the Laune Rangers Club. He had played with Laune Rangers in his youth, winning an East-Kerry Championship medal in 1932. As Club Chairman, and as a member afterwards, he did Trojan work in the J.P. O Sullivan Park, erecting the wire fencing around the pitch. Players, past and present, officers and members of the club joined with Co. Council staff to form a guard of honour at both the removal of the remains to St. James’ Church on Sunday and at the funeral to Dromavalla Cemetery on Monday. The Kerry Co. Board was represented at the funeral by joint-Treasurers, Mort Galvin and James Coffey. James Coffey, at the club meeting on 24th April, summed up a tribute to him by saying, ‘I don’t think the man had an enemy,’ and the meeting adjourned as a mark of respect.

The death occurred on 29th May of Timothy ‘Todd’ Mulvihill, who had been a well-known chemist in the town for many years. He had taken a keen interest in sport and had been one of those responsible for the purchase and earlier development of the J.P. O Sullivan Memorial Park in the early fifties. At that time he gave most of his leisure time to raising funds for the park. Members of the Laune Rangers Club and O Sullivan Park Committee formed a guard of honour at the funeral to Dromavalla Cemetery.

The death occurred at the end of Aug. of Ted Mangan, Iveragh Road. Although he had been most proficient at rugby, he also played with the Laune Rangers in the thirties.

The death occurred on 15th Aug. of Mick Coffey, Lower Bridge Street. The Laune Rangers’ Club had been formed in his pub and he had been a staunch supporter of the club all through his life.

The death occurred on 24th Dec. of Kevin Murphy, Lismacfinnane. He had been a noted footballer with Laune Rangers in the 40’s. Members of the Laune Rangers Club formed a guard of honour at the funeral to Dromavalla on St. Stephen’s Day.

The AGM of the Mid-Kerry Board took place. The Secretary, Pat Clifford, in his report stated, “The year under review was successful for Mid-Kerry in so far as we are back at the top of Kerry football. Two teams from the area took part in the Co. Senior Championship, Mid-Kerry and Laune Rangers. Mid-Kerry beat Laune Rangers in the first round and went on to the final by beating Killarney and Austin Stacks. In the final, Mid-Kerry was beaten by Feale Rangers. The game, which was played in very bad weather conditions, did not suit some of the Mid-Kerry players, a situation further aggravated by the injury to Paudie Lynch. Jack McGrath must get great credit for taking the team to the Co. Final. He put great effort and time into the training of the team and, I must say, he did not get great co-operation from some of the players and selectors.

Mid-Kerry took part in the Kerryman Shield but did not qualify for the final stages. In the U-21 Co. Championship, Mid-Kerry were beaten by Laune Rangers, who went onto the semi-final. The two minor teams from the area did not do well in the Co. Minor Championship. Within the area a total of games were played. The biggest problem for the Board was the getting dates for the finals of our competitions. The reason for this is that the Co. Board can do as it wishes – make fixtures and call them off again at short notice or no notice, without giving any consideration to the District Boards.

The following are the winners of the competitions within the area: Senior Championship – Beaufort, Senior League – not finished, O Sullivan Cup (1977) – Beaufort, Novice Championship – Glenbeigh, Minor ‘A’ – Laune Rangers, Minor ‘A’ – Beaufort, U-16 ‘A’ – Laune Rangers, U-16 ‘B’ – Milltown/Castlemaine, U-14 ‘A’ – Laune Rangers, U-14 ‘B’ – Keel, U-12 ‘A’ – Laune Rangers, U-12 ‘B’ – Glenbeigh.

I the new playing season, I would like to se the present system of selecting Mid-Kerry teams scrapped, because it is a system that never worked and will never work. I propose that the present Mid-Kerry bye-laws should be deleted and replaced by bye-laws that would allow the Board to keep up with the changing times. I also propose that the Co. Board would allow more time to District Boards for the playing of their games. Furthermore, I propose that clubs, which do not make sure that their players, selected on Mid-Kerry teams, tug out, train and play, should be fined or omitted from local competitions.

I wish to congratulate Feale Rangers on winning the Co. Senior Championship for the first time, the clubs within the area who won or did well in Co. Board competitions, Paudie Lynch who was Mid-Kerry’s only representative on the Kerry team and Pat O Shea, selector, who brought the Sam Maguire Cup back to Kerry.

I am not seeking re-election, because it is about time that I should get out and let somebody new take over. I have worked for the GAA for the past 22 years and if I go to the All-Ireland Final next September, I will have to stand on Hill 16, because the Co. Board laws say that I cannot get a ticket.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the clubs for their co-operation, our referees, the officers of Bord na nOg, other Board officers, the Kerryman for the great coverage it gives to our games, Mícheál Griffin, Glenbeigh, for the help he gave us with our training fund collection, and our supporters. A special word of thanks to Jack McGrath, the senior trainer. Finally, a word of thanks to the Board Chairman, James Coffey, whose work at club, District Board and Co. Board levels speaks for itself.”

The AGM of the Laune Rangers Club was held in the CYMS Hall, Killorglin, on Wed. 3rd Jan. 1979. The Secretary, Jerome Conway, in his report stated, “1978 has been a year of mixed fortunes for the club. There was plenty of activity on the field, at the field and otherwise. On the field, top of the queue must go to our minor teams. The minor team rose to magnificent heights in Athlone when annexing the All-Ireland Seven-a-side trophy. All of us there will bear witness to the spirit shown by the players on that day. After that, the minors won the Co. Minor League for the first time ever and made amends for the previous year’s failure in that competition. However, the team crashed to an unprecedented low, when they lost to John Mitchels, after a replay, in the first round of the Co. Championship. That was a temporary lapse, for they showed great determination in reaching the semi-finals of the Co. U-21 Championship. This they narrowly and unluckily lost. Of course, the minors were aided by Teddy Clifford, James O Shea, Tom O Connor (capt.) and others. The Minor ‘B’ team caused the upset of the year when defeating the ‘A’ team in the Mid-Kerry Minor Final. This was no fluke, as they had already served notice of their intentions. Finally, congratulations to the five players who were on the Co. Minor panel, Michael F. O Shea, Anthony Shannon, John O Neill, James Sheehan and Anthony Corkery.

Still on the playing field, our ‘B’ team must get the highest congratulations for winning promotion to Div. 3 of the Co. League. They showed very good consistency throughout the year and should do very well in Div. 3. Congratulations to both players and selectors. Our senior team got off to a great start in the Co. League. They threatened to achieve a major breakthrough. Good consistency was maintained up to the last few games. Then, just when we seemed likely to qualify for the top-four playoff, we collapsed. However, considering that we are going through a transitional period, I suppose it was a good achievement to almost reach the top-four playoff. At this stage, we are the ‘Cinderella’ team in Mid-Kerry. Gone are the days when we were feared by all the teams. We are now in the same position as Beaufort was five years ago. See what they have achieved by determination, training, pride in their club and guidance! We will have to show more interest in winning the Mid-Kerry Championship. Make no mistake, it is no mean feat, with Glenbeigh (top four qualifiers and Intermediate Championship semi-finalists), Beaufort (Div. 2 winners and Intermediate Championship finalists), Milltown/Castlemaine (Novice finalists) and Keel (last year’s Intermediate Championship finalists). I would like to thank the players for giving their effort during the year and would urge them to stay with us again and together we will succeed. Thanks, also, to the selectors, who do a good, if thankless, job.

The Parish League and Championship were a tremendous success this year, except the performance of Over Laune. There was a great turnout by all the teams in the League, except Over Laune, culminating in a great final between Upper Town/Sunhill/Cromane and Lower Town/Meanus, with the latter proving victorious. The Championship was also a thrilling campaign, Over Laune being the punch-bag, and a great game is envisaged on Sunday between Lower Town/Meanus and Caragh Lake/Rangue. Gone are the days when Over Laune were the kingpins of these competitions. All that is to blame is the players and this lack of interest by some players is rubbing off on the performances of the club senior team. I would propose that we should stagger the League and Championship next year.

I would like to thank the workers of the committees for their great work during the year. Firstly, the Field Committee, ably led by Jim Casey, the field reflects their great work. 1978 saw the completion of the juvenile dressing-rooms, the store, the ladies’ and gents’ toilets, the development of the juvenile pitch at the lower end of the field and the moving towards the road of the main pitch. Recognition of this great work was given this year, when the field was raised to the status of a county ground, entitling the field to National League and other inter-county games. The Social Committee, under Joe Crowley, with his faithful dance-crews, provide the finance for the club. Without their marvellous efforts, none of the work in the field could have been attempted. Thanks to my fellow officers, who combine to keep the club afloat. Chatting to people from other clubs, I have no doubt but that we have the greatest officers of any club in the county. They are just mighty workers. Their respect for the club, their pride in the royal blue, their general enthusiasm are bound to rub off on others and help put this club where it belongs, at the very top.

Finally, since I am not seeking re-election, I would like to thank you for having me as your secretary for the past eight years. It has been a great honour for me to have been associated with the Laune Rangers Club. I have been lucky during my term to have had the same Chairman, James Coffey. He was of immense help to me. However, no one or two can run a club. It is a combination of members and players working together. Thank you all for your co-operation. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.”
